Most of the affected employees are in isolation in the base camp at Muyunkum, while several employees were transported to the central regional hospital in Tamerlan village, following the recommendations of the medical personnel on site.
The access to the site of Muyunkum has been closed.

KATCO immediately initiated the case investigation and contact tracing procedures.

The company is working closely with and following the guidance of the local health authorities.

PCR testing of all KATCO employees at both the Muyunkum and Tortkuduk sites is conducted to confirm the results, according to the recommendations of Sanitary authorities of the Turkestan region.

“This is the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that KATCO has registered positive cases on site. While rigorous measures have been put in place to avoid an outbreak of COVID -19 on site, KATCO was also prepared for the current situation. Our first priority remains the health and safety of all our people,” said KATCO General Director, Gerard Fries. “We wish our affected employees a speedy recovery and we will continue to take appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our people and the local community, in accordance with the requirements of the state authorities.”

KATCO expects to assess the potential impact of the outbreak, if any, on its operational activities and 2021 planned production in due course, although the current focus remains on supporting the affected employees.

Additional details will be provided to stakeholders in the coming days, once confirmatory testing has been completed.
