With its Chinese partner XTC New Energy, Orano is involved in the manufacturing and recycling of battery components for electric cars. Another step towards low-carbon sustainable transport.

What’s the purpose of Neomat CAM?

Neomat CAM is a joint venture owned 51% by XTC New Energy and 49% by Orano. Together, we will build a plant producing cathode active materials (CAM), essential components for the European gigafactories making and improving the performance of electric vehicle batteries. Located in the port of Dunkirk, it will produce 40,000 metric tons of CAM each year and equip around 500,000 electric vehicles. The facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2028.

What does the future hold for this industrial project based in the Hauts-de-France region?

This plant is the first phase of an industrial platform whose production capacity could rise to 80,000 metric tons per year. In the future, it plans to accommodate a plant for precursor cathode active materials (P-CAM) as well as a hydrometallurgical plant for recycling manufacturing waste from gigafactories and end-of-life batteries.

With our Chinese partner XTC New Energy, we have been combining our expertise and know-how for the past three years in order to build a state-of-the-art plant located in France and to serve the European battery market. With this plant, we are laying the industrial foundations for a new key ecosystem in the heart of France’s Battery Valley. We are calling for a regulatory framework that strengthens European preference and fully supports the entire value chain, including the recycling of batteries and their strategic materials.
