Orano, KEPCO E&C, and SeAH Extend Partnership for Developing Used Nuclear Fuel Dry Storage in Korea
Extended team now includes additional Korean entities with academic, special materials, engineering, and manufacturing expertise.
May 10, 2023 – Orano TN Americas, KEPCO E&C, and SeAH Besteel Co. recently expanded their industrial partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with additional Korean entities for manufacturing and delivering dry storage of used nuclear fuel serving South Korea’s current and future needs. The MOU was signed at the Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference hosted by the Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF) in Gyeongju, Korea.
“Our new team represents the full range of expertise and experience needed to design, license, and deliver proven dry storage solutions with high local content,” said Jaemin Lee, Korea Branch Director, Orano TN. “This global approach will involve the entire value chain of the Back End sector, and will help create value, competencies, and employment in Korea.”
In this new agreement, the involvement of Kyung Hee University Nuclear Department will help prepare future generations of engineers for the nuclear energy industry. Konasol will develop and deliver neutron absorber plates, a highly technical and valuable material for dry storage canisters. BRnC, KOASIS, and CAD-IT Korea will support the engineering requirements. Furthermore, the participation of SeAH Besteel's partners is expected to strengthen their capability in manufacturing.
The three original team members, formed with an MOU in 2022, will continue contributing their key capabilities: Orano’s dry fuel storage technologies and services developed over several decades of serving nuclear energy sites, KEPCO E&C’s engineering and licensing support for the dry storage system and facilities, and SeAH Besteel’s manufacturing expertise with specialty metals in the fabrication of dry storage canisters and casks.
