Orano Signs MOU for Developing Used Nuclear Fuel Dry Storage in Korea

Agreement between Orano, SeAH Besteel, and KEPCO E&C combines each companies’ strengths into a unique offering to serve Korea’s needs.
BETHESDA, Md., May 23, 2022 – Orano TN Americas, a subsidiary of Orano NPS, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SeAH Besteel Co., Ltd., and KEPCO E&C on Monday, May 16, to strengthen mutual cooperation with the intent to develop a successful business serving South Korea’s current and future needs for the secure management of used nuclear fuel in dry storage.

“Through decades of use and numerous analyses, dry storage of used nuclear fuel has been proven to be a safe and secure management strategy,” said Jaemin Lee, Korea Branch Director, Orano TN. “This agreement brings together our companies’ proven abilities and quality performance in preparation for safely and securely transferring and managing South Korea’s used nuclear fuel in dry storage systems.”

As detailed in the MOU, Orano will provide its dry fuel storage technologies and services developed over several decades of serving nuclear energy sites, SeAH Besteel will provide its manufacturing expertise with specialty metals in the fabrication of dry storage canisters, and KEPCO E&C will provide engineering and licensing support for the dry storage system and facilities.

Orano has recently completed several projects in Korea, including delivery of the first dual purpose cask manufactured by SeAH Besteel for an American utility, and the production of transfer equipment by SeAH Besteel for Orano’s first TN-LC transport cask licensed in South Korea for high burn-up used nuclear fuel. The TN-LC cask completed its first journey last year with an international transport of nuclear material from South Korea to Sweden.
