Orano Med, a subsidiary of the Orano group specializing in nuclear medicine, is developing a new generation of targeted cancer therapies based on the unique properties of lead-212 (212Pb). Better known as lead-212 alpha therapy, this approach destroys cancer cells while limiting the impact on surrounding healthy cells. It opens up promising prospects for patients who have only limited treatment options.

Orano Med is currently conducting several clinical trials in patients with different types of cancer to evaluate the efficacy of its drug candidates.

Orano Med is unique in that it is the first biotech company to control the entire value chain of lead-212-based targeted alpha therapy: from pre-clinical research to clinical development, and from production to distribution of drugs.

Pre-clinical research

Orano Med has its own pre-clinical laboratories
to accelerate the transition of its molecules to clinical trials in humans.

Clinical development

11 drug candidates are currently
in development, including:

  • AlphaMedixTM : neuroendocrine tumors,
  • 212Pb-GRPR : solid tumors such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and glioblastoma,
  • 212Pb-CEA-PRIT : colorectal cancer and other solid tumors,
  • 212Pb-DARPin-DLL3 (MP0712) : small cell lung cancer and others.

Production and distribution

To guarantee broad and secure access to treatment, Orano Med has an integrated industrial platform, overing the entire value chain, from access to raw materials to distribution of the final drug to hospitals in less than 24 hours. An essential capability given that the half-life of lead-212 is 10.6 hours:

  • ATEF (France): the world’s first industrial platform dedicated to the production of thorium-228, the precursor of lead-212;
  • 2 ATLabs in France and the United States: pharmaceutical laboratories dedicated to the large-scale production of treatments radiolabeled with lead-212.
