After her university studies, she taught German for two years and worked for three years as a cultural attaché at the France Embassy in Bonn (1987-1990). After graduating from the ENA, she was appointed to the European Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she first dealt with European Community external relations issues, then internal community affairs, in particular the creation of the JHA pillar (1994-1997), before becoming technical advisor to the office of Pierre Moscovici, Minister for European Affairs (1997-2001). From 2001 to 2005, she served as Advisor in charge of Enlargement and Central and South-Eastern Europe as part of the Permanent Representation of France to the European Union in Brussels. She then became advisor for Europe and the former USSR in Washington (2005-2008), followed by Director of the Agency for French education abroad (AEFE) from 2008 to 2013. Chief Executive Officer of Globalization, Culture, Education and International Development from 2013 to 2017, she endeavored to mobilize the Directorate-General, its network, operators and partners, in the service of economic diplomacy and influence, environment and sustainable development. Anne-Marie DESCÔTES was French Ambassador to Germany from June 2017 to August 2022. She received the decoration of Officer in the National Order of Merit on November 15, 2018 and Officer in the Legion of Honor on October 17, 2024. She was elevated to the status of Ambassador of France on November 25, 2020. She has been a member of the Board of directors of the Company since October 19, 2022. She also holds a PhD in particle physics, as well as an accreditation to supervise research (HDR). She has conducted research in particle physics and participated in the construction of major instrumental projects for CERN. After serving on several scientific councils and committees, she was appointed in 2012 as coordinator of the P2IO (Physics of the 2 Infinities and Origins) Laboratory of Excellence (LabEx), which specializes in the physics of the infinitely small and the infinitely large. Anne-Isabelle ETIENVRE joined the CEA in 2003, in the Department of Particle Physics, which she took over as Director in 2014. In 2016, she was appointed Director of the Institute for Research on the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (IRFU), a position she held for six years. This institute of 1,100 employees carries out R&D in the fields of subatomic physics, space, digital technology and related instrumentation (particle detectors, accelerators, microelectronics, superconducting magnets, space). From 2022 to 2023, she was advisor in charge of research to the Minister of Higher Education and Research. From 2023 to 2025, she was Director of Fundamental Research (DRF) at the CEA. The DRF brings together 10 R&D institutes for the CEA’s key areas and programs and counts more than 4,000 employees. It oversees major projects, under bilateral agreements or research infrastructures, and is involved in more than 30 France 2030 programs. Very open to the international community through structuring partnership agreements, the DRF is also rooted in partnership research, with 550 active patents and 38 active start-ups. Anne-Isabelle ETIENVRE was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the CEA by the Council of Ministers on July 11, 2025.
